Elastic vs. Non-Stretch Webbing: Choosing a Strap

Compare elastic and non-stretch woven webbing by function, adjustment, recovery and evaluation.

Compare elastic and non-stretch woven webbing by function, adjustment, recovery and evaluation.

Begin with the function

Elastic is selected when controlled extension and recovery are needed. Non-stretch webbing is generally chosen where a strap should retain a more stable length in normal use, although all materials can deform under load. Neither term alone defines a performance limit.

Specify elastic behavior

For elastic components, define relaxed dimensions, target extension under the relevant load, recovery and the test or measurement method. Consider skin contact, the way the elastic is sewn, repeated use, washing and any exposure relevant to the garment or product.

Specify the webbing assembly

For a non-stretch strap, define the expected adjustment range, hardware fit, edge feel, seam design and relevant performance requirements. Assess the whole sewn assembly rather than assuming that a material label establishes its capacity.

Compare samples in the finished product

Evaluate the candidates with actual hardware, seams and substrate. Agree on the approved construction, appearance and acceptance tests. If the application involves lifting, restraint or fall protection, use properly engineered and rated products under the applicable requirements.

Frequently asked question

Is elastic suitable for every adjustable strap?

No. Suitability depends on the extension, load, user experience and safety requirements. Evaluate a representative assembly for the intended use.

Final specifications, product suitability and any required testing or certification depend on the intended application and agreed order requirements.
